The Liberation of Portugal

It is a time of trial for the US and NATO forces. The war of attrition
continues as predicted. While no nuclear incidents have occurred,
conventional actions are unlimited and escalating. Strategically, the
Soviets have realized the need to isolate the American continent. A two
pronged attack has achieved what the Pentagon has always feared.

A sortie by the Northern Fleet captured Keflavik and all too quickly a
bomber base was established. This was a much planned for Red move. A
simultaneous rush of Soviet submarines kept NATO from counter attacking.
The success of the submarines was NOT predicted. Allied naval forces
struggled to get their second wind through a series of large clashes in
the North Atlantic. Losses were heavy on both sides.

Two months later, just when the Allies were about to re-emerge and contest
the seas, the second phase of the attack was launched by the Soviets.
Striking around the Horn of Africa, remnants of the pacific fleet invaded
the island chain of Madeira (Portugal). Very quickly another bomber base
was established and significant forces were flown in. Unbelievably, the
Allies now face defeat in Europe if the resupply channel cannot be opened.

As you assume command of Allied hopes, you must take stock of the situation.
At your command, are three major surface fleets, two submarine wolfpacks,
and an ASW group. All told, close to five hundred aircraft have been
assembled throughout the theater and placed under your command. This the
be "the big show". Leading the way is sub group Alpha. The goal of this
four sub group is to clear a path for the Carrier Battle group hot on its
heels. Together, they will provide the punch to soften up the Madeira
before the third surface group, an invasion fleet, arrives. Reserves
consist of a second carrier group in port at Norfolk......and that is a
long way from the action.

Your goal is to establish your invasion forces just off the shore of
Porto Santo (look it up, Admiral). Short of that, you must at least
destroy the bases in the Madeiras and remove the threat to Atlantic
convoys. Be warned, the Soviets smell success and have made considerable
forces available to resist the threat. Good luck.
